4to. First edition. Firsthand scientific results from the Swedish expeditions to Spitsbergen in the years 1861 and 1864, featuring a detailed map of foremost trigonometrical measurements and soundings between Nordaustlandet (North East Land) and the adjacent coast of Spitsbergen, as far as South Cape (Sorkapp). In 1861,
Nordenskiöld joined noted Swedish geologist Otto Torell on a polar expedition to Spitsbergen, where he discovered plant fossils of the Tertiary period. In 1864, he led his own expedition, promoted by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, primarily for the purpose of mapping Spitsbergen. ”The major purpose of the expedition was to carry out a reconnaissance for an arc measurement in Spitsbergen and to investigate the islands to the east of the archipelago.., in later life Nordenskiold would reminisce about the voyage as the most agreeable of his polar travels.” Hulth, Nordenskiold-Bibliografi 28.
